The Military Force of The Democratic People's Republic of North Korea

Picture
North Korea's military also known as the Korean's People's Army has been around since about the time that Kim Il-Sung, the first leader in the Kim dynasty, came to power. According to the Article Korean People's Army - Introduction the Korean's People's Army also known as the KPA was established on February 8, 1948 (army). The army was first commanded by Kim Il-Sung and since his death has been commanded by Kim-Jong-Il. if you would like to read the whole article on how the KPA was formed then click here.

The KPA according to Background Note: North Korea has one of the biggest armies in the world with about 1.2 million active duty personnel, compared to about six hundred eighty thousand in the South Korean military(Background Note). This leaves South Korea at a disadvantage of about 2 to 1 if North Korea ever decided to attack. The same article goes on to say that North Korea may be spending up to as much as a quarter of GNP (Gross National Product) on their military (Background). The fact that North Korea is spending so much of its funds on military expenses instead of things such as agriculture is extremely dystopian. The people of the country are starving and the leaders are would rather show that they have military power rather than feed the population of the country.

The Article Background Note: North Korea says that North Korea deploys most of their troops along the demilitarized zone, also known as the DMZ, which is the line that separates North and South Korea which was established by the armistice signed during the Korean war (Background). The DMZ is very close to the capital of south Korea which means that if the North were to attack the south there would likely be little to no warning of it at all. We believe that an attack on South Korea could set off a chain reaction pulling many countries in and making the conflict more than just a war between North and South Korea but is could turn in to a global conflict. The dystopian aspect of this is that the North Korean government has the ability to drag many countries into a conflict that they don't want to happen and cause the deaths of thousands if not millions of people. Another concern with an attack on the south is that North Korea may have weapons of mass destruction but that is discussed more in the section of out website called nuclear capabilities.
